Died at Birney Hospital Where He Had Been Confined for Several Months
Alfred M. Jefferis, perhaps one of the most prominent known men in Estherville, died at the Birney Hospital Thursday [June 3, 1926] after an illness of over three years. He was given medical treatment by Estherville doctors and was at the State Hospital for some time but could get no relief and he came back here early in January and had since been at the Birney Hospital. Deceased was born at Philadelphia, Pa., November 2, 1863. He came to Iowa in January, 1893, being the thirty years of age. He remained unmarried. He is survived by one sister, now a resident at San Diego, California, and by an aged aunt at Carrolltown, Ill. Mr. Jefferis was prominent in Masonic circles, held several offices and was highly esteemed by his brethren. In December, 1897, he made his progress up to the Consistory, being at the time of his death a member of Consistory No. 2, at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Mr. Jefferis came to Estherville in 1895 and was made assistant to P. G. Herner in the civil engineering department of the old B.C.R.& N. Railway. When the new depot was built here he superintended its construction. A few years later he resigned his position with the company and opened a surveyor’s office in Estherville, which he continued until too ill to follow the work.. He was a highly respected man and liked by all who knew him. Funeral services were conducted at the Allen Funeral Home by Rev. Wallace Essingham of the Episcopal church. Messrs. Fred Albertson, Orin Manthe, Bertha Gaard and Winifred Morse furnished appropriate selections accompanied by Mrs. Henry Graaf. The Blue Lodge, Chapter Commandery and Shrine, were represented at the services by members and by floral tributes. The interment was made at Oak Hill Cemetery with the rites of the Masonic fraternity conducted by North Star Lodge No. 447. Those present at the funeral say they never heard a finer sermon than Rev. Essingham delivered at this funeral. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, June 9, 1926)
