Good Woman Gone
Mother of W. A. Stone Passed Away Last Wednesday, Aged 84 Years
Was Bedfast For Many Years
The Funeral was Held From the Union Baptist Church Saturday Morning at Ten o’clock
Mrs. Elizabeth Hutchinson, mother of W. A. Stone, died at the home of her son last Wednesday at the age of 84 years, 2 months and 32 days. She was so injured about eight years ago that she had been unable to walk and for much of the time was confined to her bed. During all that time she has been a patient sufferer, barely ever complaining and always bearing her affliction with great fortitude. She was ready to go and waiting the call of the Divine Master and at her request the ladies of the Baptist church, of which she was a devout member, had prepared the robe which should clothe the mortal body, and she always firmly believed that the spotless garments of immortality with which the spirit shall be clothed are ready for those who endeavor to live the right life.Elizabeth Johnson was born near Rochester, New York, April 2, 1829. She was married to Nathan Stone August 4, 1849, and to this union eight children were born, four sons and four daughters, of which only one survives, W. A. Stone of this city. After the death of her husband, who passed away in Nebraska many years ago, she was married to J. B. Hutchinson of Jackson, Minnesota, October 10, 1892. Mr. Hutchinson died several years ago and since that time she has been making her home with her son in this city.
Early in life the decedent affiliated with the Baptist church and since that time hers has been a noble Christian life. Despite her own affliction she was always interested in the welfare of others with kind words and sympathy for those in trouble and good wholesome advice for those whom she loved.
Being deprived of a mother’s care at the tender age of two years, she was raised by foster parents and her life was one of toil and hardship. It was under great difficulties that she gained her education but having a determined spirit she overcame many of the obstacles that would have daunted many a braver heart. During the time that she has been confined to her bed it was with a grateful heart that she welcomed the ladies of the church who would meet at her home on many occasions and spend the afternoon with her.
The funeral was held from the Union Baptist church Saturday morning, the services being conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. D. Vannoy. Interment was made in Oak Hill cemetery. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, July 2, 1913)
