C. J. Holmquist, Former Local Resident, Dies
Charles J. Holmquist, 60, of Cedar Rapids, former Estherville business man, died Saturday [January 27, 1945] morning in a Cedar Rapids hospital following a brief illness. Mr. Holmquist is a brother-in-law of Mr. Lucy Bale of Estherville.

Funeral services were held Monday in Cedar Rapids after which the body was brought to Estherville. A short service was held Tuesday at Oak Hill cemetery where burial was made. Pall bearers were Clarence Mathieson, Andrew McAndrew, D. A. Bagan, George Thompson, G. K. Allen and Irwin C. Nichols.

Holmquist was born Feb. 9, 1884, at Hartford, Conn., and was married to Mathilda Johnson on June 9, 1926, at Jackson, Minn. He was manager of the Syndicate clothing company in Estherville on North Sixth street where the Montgomery Ward store is now located. The building which housed the clothing store was later occupied by the Sconberg and Kilgore store and burned down a number of years ago. In 1926 the Holmquist family moved to Cedar Rapids where he has been associated with the Syndicate clothing company for 30 years, most of that time as manager of the clothing department. Funeral services for Charles J. Holmquist, 60, manager of the clothing department of the Syndicate Clothing Company, Cedar Rapids, was held at 3 p.m. Monday, with Rev. D. Loferski, Episcopal pastor, officiating. He died at 11:15 a.m. Saturday. He came to Montecello with the clothing firm of Johnson & McFarlane, who later merged their business with the Stuhler clothing store. Holmquist was employed in the Stuhler clothing store for a time, later going to Charles City and from there to Cedar Rapids.

Born Feb. 9, 1884, at Hartford, Conn., he was married to Mathilda Bale June 9, 1926, at Jackson, Minn., who survives. They moved to Cedar Rapids in 1926. Holmquist had been associated with the Syndicate Clothing company for 30 years, most of that time as manager of the clothing department. He was an ardent fisherman, usually spending his vacations at some Minnesota fishing resort. He was a member of the Eagles lodge.

The body was taken Tuesday to Estherville for burial. (Monticello Express, Monticello, IA, February 1, 1945)
