Fred Hintz Died Suddenly Yesterday
Ill Only a Few Hours Before Death Came

Well Known to People of This Community – Funeral Will Be Held Tomorrow
This community was shocked yesterday morning by the report that Fred Hintz had died very suddenly at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Lytle on west Emery street. He passed away at 4:10 a.m. Mr. Hintz had been making his home with Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Post but they went away on a visit and he went to the Lytle home to stay during their absence. He walked over town Monday afternoon and home again between five and six o’clock. He seemed natural and did not complain of being ill. At ten o’clock he retired for the night and at four o’clock the Lytle family heard him groaning. Mr. Lytle went to his room and found him in an unconscious condition. A doctor was called but he passed away before the doctor arrived. Mr. Hintz was a well known man in this community. He came to Estherville thirty-seven years ago and for many years conducted a meat market and later moved onto a farm in Dickinson county. Later he built a home on the west side where he and Mrs. Hintz lived until her death seven years ago. Only one child was born to Mr. and Mrs. Hintz. They had one son, Louis, who is s resident of this city. Deceased would have been eighty years of age on March 21st of this year. He was born in Germany and came to this country when twenty years of age. He was a good hearted and honest man and will be greatly missed by his many friends in this community. Funeral services will be held tomorrow and the remains interred in Oak Hill Cemetery. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved son in his hours of sorrow. Death came very suddenly about four o’clock on Tuesday morning to Fred Hintz, one of our pioneer business men. He apparently was feeling well when he retired but was taken suddenly ill about four o’clock in the morning.He resides with the Ray Lytle family on the West Side and had been playing cards with them in the early evening. They heard a noise in his room in the early morning and when Mr. Lytle went in to see him he said, ‘Ray, I guess I am going this time.” He only spoke a few words after this and he passed away.
Mr. Hintz was born March 21, 1846, in Germany near Berlin. He served in the German army before coming here. He was married in April, 1876, at Kellogg, Iowa, and there was one son born Lewis Hintz of this city.
After he moved to this city he engaged for years in the meat business and was one of the finest meat cutters ever here. He was a loyal member of the order of K. of P.’s The funeral service will be held from the German Lutheran church in this city on Thursday afternoon the Rev. Lang officiating. The remains will be laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery in the family lot. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, January 6, 1926)
Among those who attended the funeral of Mr. Hintz at Estherville Thursday were Mr. and Mrs. Hans Jensen and Alfred, Mr. and Mrs. Christ Jensen, Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Jensen, Mr. and Mrs. John Swanson. For several years Mr. Hintz and family occupied the farm now owned by Frank Andre, moving to Estherville about nine years ago. He died quite suddenly last Tuesday morning.
