Young Mother Died Last Thursday Eve
Mrs. Ernest M. Houts Victim of Pneumonia – Funeral Service Held Saturday
Mrs. Ernest Houts died at her home in this city last Thursday evening, her death being the result of influenza which later developed into pneumonia. She was one of the popular young mothers of the city, being respected and admired by her friends and neighbors for her sterling character and happy disposition. She was the mother of two children, a son of seven years and a baby girl just six months of age. Her death is especially sad on account of the babe that will never know a mother’s loving care.

Fannie Nourse was born in this city and was at the time of her death thirty years and four months of age. She spent most of her life in Estherville, where she was widely known. Besides the husband and two children she is survived by three brothers and one sister. They are Herb, who is in France, Chas. of Wallingford, and Harold, who lived with Mrs. Fouts [Houts]. The sister lives in Spokane, Washington. Her parents also survive her, they live at Bossburg, Washington. She was married to Ernest Houts nine years ago, on August 30th. The grief stricken family have the sympathy of the entire community in the loss of a loving wife and mother. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, December 11, 1918)

The entire neighborhood was saddened last Thursday when the news went forth that Mrs. Fannie N. Houts had passed away at her home on North 5th Street. She had been sick but a few days, and had seemingly recovered and was up and around the home on Tuesday when she suddenly grew worse, and passed away after [ ] days’ illness.

Mrs. Houts was strictly an Estherville product, having been born in a house on south 13th street on Aug. [ ] 1888. Her parents being Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Nourse, old time residents of this city, but now located at Bassburg, Washington. She was educated in our public schools.

During her girlhood days she became a member of the Baptist church and was always interested in the [ ], and lived a good helpful Christian life, shedding sunshine in her home and in her intercourse with friends and neighbors who will greatly miss her. She ws united in marriage to Enoch M. Houts on August 30, 1909, and to this union was born two children – one son now seven years old, and on daughter six months old, who with the husband are left to mourn the passing of a devoted Christian wife and a kind affectionate mother. Besides the husband and children she leaves to mourn her loss, her father and mother, three brothers, C. E. Nourse of Wallingford, Herbert who is now in service in France, and Harold who lived with his sister; and sister, Mrs. Hazel Davis of Spokane, Wash. The remains were laid to rest in Oak Hill cemetery, Rev. Dungan of the Christian church officiating at the services. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, December 11, 1918)
