Carrie Huldah O’Neil was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, Feb. 15, 1858, and died at the home of her son, E. A. Houts, in Estherville, Iowa, May 26, 1916, aged 58 years, 3 months and 11 days.

Her education was received in the schools of Denmark. She also took training to become a nurse. She was married while in Denmark to a Mr. McGill who lived but four years after the marriage. Soon after her husband’s death she came to America to live with an uncle. After a short stay in New York, she came to Iowa Falls, Iowa, and later moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. On the 25th of August, 1885, she was united in marriage to J. W. Houts, of Toddville, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Houts lived at Garner for a time and then moved to Bricelyn, Minn., from which point they later moved to Estherville. Mr. Houts died in 1912 and was buried in Oak Hill cemetery.

To this union eight children were born, Jas. D. Houts, of Des Moines; Mrs. A. T. Peterson of Brainard, Minn.; Mrs. Jas. Q. Boylan, of Norwich, N.D.; Mrs. Ralph Davis, of Estherville; John, Milo and Floyd Houts. E. M. Houts of Estherville, and E. J. Houts, of Valentine, Mont., were Mr. Hout’s sons by his first marriage.

After the death of Mr. Houts, Mrs. Houts lived in Estherville for a time, then moved to Ames and later to Brainard, Minn. She has been sick since last August, and came to Estherville some six weeks ago for medical treatment.

Mrs. Houts was converted and united with the M.E. church while living in Toddville. For a time she was a member of the Modern Brotherhood of America. Being a trained nurse she spent much of her time watching by the sick beds of others, lovingly and carefully nursing them back to health and strength. Besides her children she leaves to mourn her departure, ten grandchildren. She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by her children, grandchildren and her many relatives and friends.

The funeral services were held in the Union Baptist church, at 2:00 p.m. Monday being conducted by Rev. J. Frederic Catlin. The body was laid to rest by the side of her departed husband in Oak Hill cemetery. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, May 31, 1916)
