John W. Houts
John W. Houts passed away Thursday [December 5, 1912) night at 2 o’clock at his home in this city on East Walnut street after an illness running over a period of one and one-half years with pneumonia.

Funeral service was held from the home Sunday, with Rev. J. D. Vannoy and Rev. John Sutton in charge. Burial was made in Oak Hill Cemetery.

J. W. Houts was born December 9, 1847, in Pennsylvania. Early in life he moved to Iowa and later to Brycelin, Minnesota. He has been making Estherville his home for the past few months, since last May.

At the time of his illness he was tending a signal tower at Brycelyn, Minnesota.

He was married to Mary Hemphill June 12, 1873, who departed this life April 3, 1883. There were born to this union three children. One died in infancy and two survive, viz Enoch and Ernest Houts of Estherville, Iowa.

He was married to Carrie [O'Neil] Magill August 25, 1885, who together with their eight children survive the deceased. The children are: James Houts of Waterloo, Iowa; Mrs. Nancy Peterson of Brainerd, Minnesota; Irving, Mary, Vina, John, Milo and Floyd all of Estherville.

Deceased is survived by two brothers and two sisters, H. Houts of Toddville, Iowa; George Houts of Rock Rapids, Iowa; Mrs. Elizabeth Anman of Toddville, Iowa; and Kate Troth of Mitchell, South Dakota. The two brothers were here to attend the funeral.

Mr. Houts was in the employ of the C.R.I.&P. railroad for almost twenty-five years. Through all these years he has rendered faithful service until his physical condition rendered it impossible for him to continue in the performance of his duties.

They have the sympathy of all in their sorrow. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, December 11, 1912)

Mr. John W. Houts died at his home in this city Thursday afternoon of paralysis, aged sixty-five years. Funeral was held Sunday afternoon and interment made in Oak Hill cemetery. A wife and ten children are left to mourn his death: Earnest, Enoch, Milo, Irving, John, Floyd, Mary and Vina, of this city, and Mrs. Peterson of Brainard, Minnesota, and James of Waterloo.
