This community was greatly shocked Monday morning when the news of the death of Henry Hanson reached them. Mr. Hanson had been sick with typhoid fever for some time, but it was quite generally supposed that he was improving. Last Saturday was the decisive day for him, and to the deep regret of everybody the disease developed alarming symptoms, and he passed away Monday [January 12, 1903] morning.

Henry A. Hanson was born in Winneshiek county, Iowa, on September 22, 1865. He worked on a farm until 18 years of age when he entered the employment of A. O. Peterson & Co. of this city, holding the position eight years. He was married to Miss Alvina Sillge April 25, 1888. He has been engaged in various business enterprises in Estherville and had built up a successful land business. He was city clerk for several terms. He had $3,000 life insurance in the Yoeman lodge.

He leaves a wife and two boys, aged thirteen and five years, a mother, three sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held at the Methodist Episcopal church today at two o’clock, Rev. Ginn preaching the sermon, assisted by the I.O.O.F. lodge. The B.P.O. Elks will take charge of the remains at the grave.

Henry Hanson was a clean man in every respect. A splendid citizen, a kind and indulgent husband and father. The sympathy of this entire community is with the widow and fatherless at this sorrowful time. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, January 14, 1903)

Death of H. A. Hanson
Henry A. Hanson died at his home on south Eighth street, in this city, Monday morning, January 12, 1902 [1903], at nine o’clock of typhoid fever of some six weeks duration. Although his death was not wholly unexpected his sudden demise shocked his many friends who were anxiously awaiting a favorable report. His removal from his scores of friends and acquaintances in the prime of life will, no doubt, cast a gloom over this community which will be hard to efface for some time to come.

Mr. Hanson was born in Winneshiek county, September 22, 1865, and moved with his parents to this county when yet a small boy. His boyhood days were spent with his parents up to the time he entered the employ of the A. O. Peterson Hardware Co. of this city. At that time he was eighteen years of age and eight years later he was proprietor of one of the leading jewelry stores of Estherville. From this time on he engaged in several different lines of business. For the past four years the buying and selling of real estate was his exclusive business, and it is said, at the time of his death his land interests were much larger than many of our citizens imagined. His marriage to Miss Alvina Sillge took place in this city on April 25, 1888. Besides his wife he leaves two sons, aged thirteen and five years, a mother, two brothers and three sisters to mourn his sudden demise.

Funeral services will be held this afternoon in the M.E. church, Rev. F. W. Ginn conducting the services, assisted by the local I.O.O.F. lodge of which he was a member. At the grave the remains will be taken charge of by the members of the B.P.O. Elks, of which order deceased was also a member. He carried a $3,000 life insurance policy in the Yeoman Insurance Order.
