Fred Ehlers Dies at 81
Fred J. Ehlers, 81, former state representative from Emmet county, mayor of Estherville for 12 years, and longtime Estherville merchant, died at 10:30 today at Holy Family hospital.Mr. Ehlers came to Estherville in 1917 and was in the mercantile business here for 36 years, selling his store to Les McCleary in 1954.
He served as mayor of Estherville for 12 years, beginning in 1935, and declined to run for a seventh term after serving six. He was active in Republican politics, serving as county central committee chairman for eight years.
During World War II Mr. Ehlers was chairman of the USO in Emmet County. He was active in various local fund drives and headed the Cancer drive for several years. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Mr. Ehlers was elected Emmet county representative to the state legislature in 1954.

F. J. Ehlers Died Saturday
Frederick (Fred) Julius Ehlers, 80, Estherville, died Saturday morning in an Estherville hospital.He was the father of Mrs. Donald Cerwick, 1114 Murray Drive.
Mr. Ehlers had been mayor of Estherville for six terms and was the owner of a drygoods store there for many years.
He was active in the Republican politics in Emmet county, had been county chairman for eight years and had been Emmet County Representative to the Iowa Legislature.
During World War II he was chairman of the Emmet County USO.
He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Cerwick, and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday afternoon from the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Estherville, with burial to be in Oak Hill Cemetery. (Ames Daily Tribune, Ames, IA, August 15, 1966)
