Mrs. Ehlers Dies at 79 After Illness
Mrs. Fred Ehlers, 79, died last night at Holy Family Hospital from cancer. She had been ill since July and had been in and out of the hospital since then.Matilda Mary Mueller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Mueller, was born Feb. 14, 1886, at Spillville. At the age of three, she moved with her parents to Plover, and she received her education in the school there.
She married Fred Ehlers at West Bend Oct. 30, 1917, and they moved to Estherville where they operated a general store until their retirement in 1955.
Mrs. Ehlers was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid, Estherville Woman’s Club, Hospital Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary of which she was a past president.
Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Donald (Loraine) Cerwick of Ames; and six grandchildren, Joel, Mary Ann, Frederick, Donald, Susan and Janel Cerwick, all of Ames.
Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. C. C. Brownlee of Emmetsburg, Mrs. Regina Bush of Mason City, and Mrs. D. A. Crowley of Sidney, Neb.; two brothers, Joe G. Mueller of Minneapolis, and Homer Mueller of Muscatine. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and three brothers.
Funeral services for Mrs. Ehlers will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran church, the Rev. W. H. Discher officiating. Family services are planned for 10 a.m. at the Reese funeral chapel.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 a.m. Wednesday until 10 a.m. Thursday. The casket will not be opened at the church at any time. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
