Mrs. O. J. Brown, Former Resident Here Succumbs
Funeral services for Mrs. O. J. Brown, who died Thursday in Minneapolis after an attack of influenza, were held here Sunday afternoon in the Baptist church, the Rev. F. Yearned officiating. Mrs. Brown was a former resident of Estherville when her husband was in the Farm Implement business here, and her many friends were saddened to hear of her death.Pallbearers were Roy Ridley, Grover McCall, Fred Trevett, J.M. Hale, L. C. Doolittle, and Charles Nourse. Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery.
Persis Viola, daughter of Joel and Sarah Hull Mundy was born in Youngstown, O., Dec. 23, 1849. When a small child she came with her parents, brothers and sisters to Iowa. They settled near Anamosa where she lived until her marriage to Orvil J. Brown on Sept. 26, 1870. For the succeeding seven years Mr. and Mrs. Brown made their home in Adams county, returning to Anamosa in 1877.
Come to Estherville
In 1892 they came to Estherville and she continued her residence here until fifteen years ago when she moved to Minneapolis to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Dean Williams and family. Mr. Brown passed away March 17, 1902.Mr. and Mrs. O. J. Brown were the parent of eight children, five of whom survive. The children are Henry O., Mrs. Hattie Yule, both of Estherville, Mrs. Jessie Williams of Minneapolis, Mrs. Lillian Martin of Rockford, Minn., and Mrs. Carrie Rice of Wadena, Minn. Besides the five children there are left three daughter-in-laws, and four son-in-laws. There are twenty-four grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers and two sisters, Henry P. Munday of Marion, Ia., Charles Munday of McCook, Neb., Mrs. Mary O’Donnell of Cedar Rapids, and Mrs. Isabell Campbell of Clinton, Ia.
Forms First Church
When only twelve years old she united with the Fairview Baptist church. On coming to Estherville she, with her husband, united with a few others and formed what was then the First Baptist church and it was largely through their work and prayers that the church was sustained. Mrs. Brown retained her membership in the Baptist church in Estherville and has been a consistent and faithful member. For the past few years ill health has kept her from active church work, but always attended services when ever she was able.Up until Christmas time, Mrs. Brown was in her usual health. A few days later she contracted influenza. She was ill but a few days and was not considered dangerously ill until on last Thursday she was taken alarmingly worse.
Those attending the funeral from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Dean Williams of Minneapolis, Mr. and Mrs. O. O. Martin of Rockford, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Rice of Wadena, Minn., and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dunn, of West Bend, Mrs. James O’Connell of Cedar Rapids, and Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Rugtiv of Appleton, Minn.
