O. J. Brown Dead
O. J. Brown died Monday afternoon at 5 o’clock p.m. at his home on east Howard street. Mr. Brown had been suffering for a number of years with asthma and was so suffering when taken with his last illness. The cause of his untimely death is attributed to other ailments besides asthma. There was rheumatic fever, and symptoms of pneumonia. Although the public were aware of the serious illness of Mr. Brown all friends and citizens of Estherville hoped and prayed that our beloved citizen might be spared to his loving family and the community in whose esteem he held a high position. But nature had her way and we are forced to chronicle the death of this respected citizen.

Mrs. O. J. Brown and eight children were at the bedside of their loving husband and father during his last hours.

The funeral services were held at the residence at 10:30 o’clock this morning, Rev. Mr. Beckway of Swea City preaching the funeral sermon. The remains were laid to rest in the Oak Hill cemetery. A sister, Mrs. Hattie Horton and children, of Ogallala, Neb., and a brother-in-law, H. P. Munday, of Anamosa, Ia., were here to attend the funeral.

O. J. Brown was born in Pitcher, N.Y., May 14, 1849. When one year of age his parents moved to Jones county, Iowa, where he remained until ten years ago. While in Jones county he spent considerable of his time in the implement business, and in 1892 moved his family to Estherville where he continued in the old occupation until a short time ago when he disposed of his business to Brown & Crowell and sought the retirement which was due him after years of faithful labor. Mr. Brown has been a member of the Odd Fellows’ lodge since 1879 and has always been prominent in Odd Fellow doings. At an early day he became associated with the Baptist church and was a most faithful and energetic Christian worker, and a strong supporter of the First Baptist church of this city.

In 1869 Mr. Brown was married to Miss Percy Munday, of Fairview, Iowa, to which union eight children were born, namely: Mrs. Lucy Wooster, Joseph Brown, Henry Brown, Mrs. Hattie Yule, Clarence Brown, of Oelwein, Jessie Brown, Lillie Brown and Carrie Brown.

Mr. Brown was a man of exceptional lovable disposition who was honored by the community as an affectionate husband and dutiful father. Estherville feels the loss and most truly shares in the sorrow of the family. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, March 19, 1902)
