D. Booth Passes Monday after His Long Illness
Made Home in County for Thirty-One Years – Seventy-Three Years Old

Daniel Booth, one of the pioneers of Emmet county, passed to his reward at his home in this city early Monday morning, May 25th, of a complication of ailments incident to advanced years.

Mr. Booth was a conspicuous figure in the history of Emmet county, especially in the eastern part around Halfa, where he resided for twenty years from 1894 until 1914 when he moved with his family to Estherville.

He was an extensive farmer and stock breeder. He was successful in these pursuits and accumulated considerable property. He was a shrewd business man, a hard worker and by his clear insight into financial affairs managed to weather the commercial storms more successfully than other men in his line of industry.

Ill health caused him to retire from the farm and move to Estherville eleven years ago, but since then had the supervision of his farms in Jack Creek township. He also had property in Chicago that required his attention.

He was devoted to his family and to the different branches of Masonry, in which organizations he was held in the greatest esteem.

He was born in Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, on September 1, 1852. He was the son of Daniel and Henrietta Booth, pioneers of Chicago and Cook county. His early boyhood and young manhood were spent on his father’s farm in Cook county. On Sept. 23, 1880, he married Rose Lauer of Chicago. In 1894 he with his wife and family, moved to Emmet county and settled on a farm near the village of Halfa. He lived in this vicinity for twenty years and became a well known resident of this county. In 1914 he retired from his agricultural pursuits and moved to the city of Estherville to live.

Daniel Booth was a well known figure in public life and was blessed with a fine family consisting of a loving wife, five sons and two daughters, all of whom are living. The children are: Edwin and E.A. Booth of La Plant, S.D.; Mrs. Marguerite Nielson of Halfa, Iowa; Daniel of Rolfe, Iowa; George, Charles and Priscilla of Estherville. Surviving brothers and sisters are Richard of Carroll, Iowa; Charles of Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. J. B. Carhill and Miss Teresa Booth of Chicago; Mrs. C. L. Cookson, Kansas City, Mo.

He was a member of the Humboldt Park Lodge A.F. and A.M.; a member of Siloam Commandery, Chicago, and Jeptha Chapter of Estherville and the Des Moines Consistery, of Des Moines.

He was 72 years, 8 month and 25 days of age.

Funeral was held Wednesday afternoon from the Presbyterian church in charge of the Masonic lodge with a Knights Templar escort. Rev. G. Voorhies preached the funeral sermon. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, May 27, 1925)

Daniel Booth Passed Away Last Monday
Had Been Seriously Ill for Several Months Past
Old Time Resident Here
Past Seventy-Two Years of Age – In Emmet County since 1894 – Funeral This Afternoon

It is with deep regret that the Democrat is called upon to announce the death of Daniel Booth, a resident of this country for thirty-one years and perhaps one of the best known citizens of the community. He passed away very suddenly at nine o’clock Monday morning. Although he had been ill for several weeks it was not thought the end would come suddenly. He had enjoyed excellent health all the years he had been a resident of this county until recently when his health commenced to trouble him. The best medical assistance possible was employed but the trouble seemed to affect his heart which caused his sudden death. Few men in Emmet county were better known than Daniel Booth. He came here from Chicago in the year 1894 and purchased seven hundred acres of land in Jack Creek and Armstrong Grove townships which he still owned at the time of his death. He resided on this farm which he had well improved and raised a larger family of children. In 1914 he and Mrs. Booth decided to quit farming and brought a home on north Thirteenth street and moved to this city. Mr. Booth’s residence here has been the happiest period of his life. Some of the children have lived at home and others came often to see their parents. It has been a pleasure for Mr. Booth to have these family reunions. He has celebrated his birthday on the 1st day of September for the past twenty years by inviting many close friends and neighbors to his home on that day where they were royally entertained.

Deceased was born at Chicago, Ill., on September 1, 1952. He spent his boyhood days with his parents who were pioneer residents there and owned a large tract of land on which Chicago had been built. On September 23, 1880, he was married to Miss Rose Lauer, also of Chicago. They remained in that city until coming to Emmet county in1894. A large family of children was born to this union and all were here at the time of his death. They are Edwin and E. A. Booth, of LaPlant, S. Dak.; Mrs. Soren Nielson, Halfa; Daniel Booth, Jr., Rolfe, Iowa; George, Charles and Priscilla Booth, of this city. Two brothers and three sisters survive him, Richard Booth, of Carroll, Iowa; Charles and Thressa Booth, of Chicago, and Mrs. C. L. Cookson, of Kansas City. Mr. Booth was a member of the Masonic lodge of this city in all its branches. Including the Knights Templar. The funeral service was held this afternoon at the Presbyterian church and Rev. G. Voorhies preached the sermon and the remains were followed to their last resting place in Oak Hill Cemetery by a large concourse of fraternal brothers and loyal friends where the Masonic funeral ritual was exemplified by James W. Ghoslin, presiding officer of the lodge. The many friends of the deceased in this community offer deep sympathy to the beloved mother and children and to the brothers and sisters who will greatly miss a loyal husband, father and brother. May he rest in peace. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, May 27, 1925)
