Little Boy Killed
Edgar Bendixon [Bendixen] Meets Death in Peculiar MannerEdgar Bendixon, nine year old son of Mr. and Mrs. M. Bendixon of Twelve Mile Lake township, received injuries in a peculiar accident at the Bendixon farm Wednesday afternoon from which he died twenty-four hours later. His father and brothers and a little sister driving the horse were engaged in putting a load of hay into the barn with the aid of a hay fork. Edgar and another brother were in the loft of the barn and when the rope was slack, waiting for the fork to be filled from the wagon, Edgar picked up the rope and wrapped it around his neck twice. When the horse started up the rope tightened and he was hurled against the side of the barn with terrific force and at the same time almost strangled to death. He was hurt internally but lived twenty-four hours after the accident occurred. No one is to blame for the accident as it was not known he was near the rope in the hay mow. It is sad indeed. The Bendixon family are among the best citizens in the county and Edgar was a bright little boy. Funeral services were held in the church near the Bendixon farm Sunday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. H. C. Hurd, of the Christian church and the remains brought to Oak Hill Cemetery for interment. The many friends of the Bendixon family sympathize with them in their hours of sorrow. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, December 4, 1912)
Victim of Accident
Young Edgar Bendixon Killed Last Thursday
Playing in Hay Loft at Time
Put Hay Carrier Rope Around Body and Horses Started Before He Was LooseA sad accident resulted in the death of Edgar Mettinus Bendixon, eight year old son of Mr. and Mrs. M. Bendixon, of Twelve Mile Lake township, Thursday afternoon about four o’clock. The little fellow had been playing in the hay loft as his father and older brother were putting in some hay by the aid of a hay fork and carrier. The little fellow was pulling back on the fork and got to be playing with the rope. He had the rope around his body and the team started, catching him in a knot and before he could unloose himself or assistance come he had been pulled to the small six inch through which the rope was supposed to go. Before the horses could be stopped his spine was injured. Medical assistance was immediately summoned and everything done but to no avail as he died in about twenty-four hours after the accident. The funeral was held from the church adjoining Mr. Bendixon’s farm Sunday, and burial made in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Little Edgar was eight years, nine months and two days of age at time of his death. He was a bright, active is mourned by all. He leaves a father, mother, two brothers and three sisters. They have the sympathy of everyone. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, December 4, 1912)
Met Frightful Death
The little eight-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. M. Bendixon, south of Raleigh, met with a horrible and fatal accident last Wednesday. It seems that Mr. Bendixon was just finishing up filling his barn with hay with a horse fork and was scraping up the scattered bunches of hay and left the team attached to the hay fork equipment. While he was thus engaged the little boy who was in the mow fastened the hay fork end of the rope to his body and just at that time his little six-year-old sister started up the team and the boy was jerked up to the top of the barn and so badly crushed that he died the following day. Funeral was held from the residence Sunday and interment made in Oak Hill cemetery in Estherville.
The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the grief stricken family. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, December 4, 1912)
