West Emmet Mother Dies
Mrs. Geo. Wheatley was Long Time Resident of That Community

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at one-thirty from the home and at two o’clock at the Methodist church for Mrs. G. G. Wheatley, 77, of Estherville who died Thursday [May 18, 1944] morning at the Park View clinic where she had been a patient for two weeks. Interment was made in Oak Hill cemetery.

Adeline Matilda Priggie was born March 11, 1867 in Hanover, Germany where she was baptized and confirmed in the German Lutheran faith. She came to America when fifteen years of age and was shipwrecked on the North Sea and rescued by an English ship bound for Leeds, her destination being Chicago. It was here that she met Gilbert Wheatley and on October 15th, 1884, Miss Adeline Mathilda Priggie and G. G. Wheatley were united in marriage.

They lived on a farm near Blue Island, Ill., for several years, moving to Spirit Lake, Iowa with their family in 1900. In 1909 they moved to their present home in West Emmet Township. Had Mrs. Wheatley lived until October 15th this worthy couple would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

She is survived by her husband and four children, Mrs. Grace Stark, Mrs. Florence Guge, Mrs. Ethel Brown and Nelson Wheatley all of Estherville.

Also eight grandchildren, three great grandchildren and a brother, Richard Priggie of Blue Island, Ill. Her parents, three sisters and an infant son preceded her in death.

Friends and neighbors of Mrs. Wheatley deeply regret her passing and she will missed in the community. She was a charter member of the neighborhood woman’s club, always ready to lend a hand to those in need.

Those from away who attended the funeral, held on May 20th at the Methodist church at Estherville were Mr. Richard Priggie and Mr. Norman Priggie of Blue Island, Ill., and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brown of Jackson, Minn. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, May 25, 1944)
