Carl Wells, Veteran Local Barber, Dies
Carl E. Wells, 58, longtime operator of a barber shop in Estherville, was found dead this morning at 9:15 at his shop by S. P. Henley, mail carrier, while on his regular mail route. Mr. Wells had been in failing health for the past several months but apparently feeling good this morning had started his daily routine by opening his shop.Born July 29, 1897, he later moved from Spirit Lake to Estherville where he attended school. Married to Florine Sather, July 9, 1919 at Jackson, Minn., Mr. Wells had operated barber shops at various locations in Estherville since that time.
Survivors include his wife; his mother, Mrs. D. C. Wells and one sister, Mrs. Joe Ringham, all of Estherville.
A member of the Christian church, funeral services have tentatively been set for Monday, pending notification of and word from Mrs. Well’s brother, Clifton Sather of Calif. Funeral Rites Monday
Funeral services for Carl E. Wells who died Thursday morning will be held Monday at the Christian church at 2 p.m., the Rev. Clyde Leeds, officiating. Friends may call at Sternborg funeral home until 10 a.m. Monday, when the body will be taken to the church to lie in state until time of services. The casket will not be open after the service. Carl Elwin Wells, son of Lucy and Deloss C. Wells, was born at Spirit Lake on July 29, 1897, and at the age of two years he moved with his parents to Estherville where he had lived since that time.He obtained his education in the public schools of Estherville. He attended Barber College at Cedar Rapids in the year 1917 and late in 1918 he accepted his first position as barber at the Gardston Barber shop at Estherville and has been operation his own barber shop at Estherville since February, 1919, with the exception of five years when he was engaged in the restaurant business here.
He was married to Miss Florine Sather by the Rev. L. H. Shock at Jackson, Minn., on July 9, 1919. The couple had no children.
Carl was baptized in the Christian church at Estherville in February, 1919.
He passed away about 9:15 a.m. on Sept. 15, 1955 at the Gardston Barber shop. It is interesting to know that Carl closed his career in the same shop where he began his work.
He is survived by his wife, Florine Wells, his 88-year-old mother, Mrs. Lucy Wells, and a sister, Mrs. J. B. Ringham of Estherville.
His father, D. C. Wells, preceded him in death on Feb. 22, 1943 at the age of 72 years. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, September 24, 1955)
