Former Local Farmer Dies
Tom Smith, 78, former Estherville farmer, died Saturday [March 6, 1954] night at his home in Oakland, Calif., after he had suffered a stroke eight months ago. He had been hospitalized for five months and spent the last three months at his home. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Sandin funeral home. He is the brother of Frank Smith of Estherville. Others surviving his death are his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Al (Viola) Sylvia of Alameda, Calif., and Mrs. Henry Reimers of Grand Junction; a son, Jake Smith of Antioch, Calif.; another brother Charles Smith of Lake Wilson, Minn.; a brother-in-law, Mack Ellis of Estherville; and two nephews, Bert and Ed Shirley of Estherville. Mr. Smith left Estherville about 20 years ago. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, March 8, 1954)
