Former Local Resident Dies In California
Mrs. John H. [G] Smith, 78, of San Diego, Calif., former Estherville resident, died there Saturday [December 6, 1958] of a heart attack.

Mrs. Smith, the former Gertrude Isabelle Upton, was born Oct. 21, 1880 near Eldora in Hardin County, the daughter of Eugene and Edna Upton. She received her education in Hardin County and on Jan. 23, 1902 was married to Ernie Ankrum of Gifford. Five children were born to this union.

Mr. Ankrum died Feb. 17, 1919 in an accident on the M. and St. L. railroad at Sherburn, Minn.

On Oct. 8, 1929 she was married to John G. Smith of Estherville. The couple made their home here until 1942 when they moved to San Diego. She was a member of First Methodist Church here for many years.

She is survived by her husband; five children, Mrs. A. C. (Vera) Hageman of Huntsville, Mo., Fred Ankrum of Caboal, Mo., Kenneth Ankrum of Kansas City, Mo., Mildred Hayes of San Diego and Merton Ankrum of Lakeside, Calif.; one step-daughter, Gretchen Smith of New York City; 17 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Earl (Agnes) Willcox of Estherville, Mrs. Ina Millslagle of Kimball, Minn., and Mrs. Gladys Saint, Niagara Falls, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Rosa Upton of Eldora; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, her parents, four brothers, one sister, and a step daughter, Margaret Smith.

Burial is to be at San Diego. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, December 8, 1958)
