Heart Disease Fatal to S. A. Shonkwiler, Estherville
S. A. Shonkwiler, 65, died Nov. 27, 1945 at 11:30 p.m. at his home from heart disease. He hadn’t been well for several years and his illness became acute about two months ago.Simon A. Shonkwiler was born Sept. 15, 1880, at Hartley. He received his education in the O’Brien county schools and attended business college in Des Moines and Minneapolis. He was married to Lilith Combs, June 18, 1906, at Arnolds Park and from the time of his marriage until 1917 he farmed near Estherville.
From 1917-1926 he was engaged in the real estate business in Spencer, and from 1926 until late in 1944 he again farmed and worked with livestock. In 1944 he moved to Estherville and bought the Spirit Lake Horse Market. Mr. Shonkwiler was a member of the Mason of 32nd degree.
Those who survive him are his widow, five sons, Oliver, Richard, Lincoln and Douglas of Estherville and Fireman 1/c Roger in the Navy stationed at Williamsburg, Va.; three daughters, Virginia of Minneapolis; Mrs. Claude Willey of Estherville, and Mrs. Lowell Evans of Estherville; one brother, Donovon of Humboldt; four sisters, Mrs. Hazel Coyle of Humboldt, Mrs. A. R. Thompson of Mattoon, Ill.; Mrs. Ethyln Evans of New York City, and Mrs. Mark Wheeler of Milford and six grandchildren.
The funeral services were held from the home and at the Baptist church on Saturday. – Estherville Daily News (Spirit Lake Beacon, Spirit Lake, IA, December 6, 1945)
