Death of Geo. Scharfenberg, Sr.
George O. Scharfenberg, Sr., died at his home in this city Tuesday evening, July 11th, after an illness of several weeks of tuberculosis. Deceased was born in Frauenbreitimgen Saxon, Meinningen, Germany, September 14, 1844, and came to America in 1868. He settled in Wisconsin and moved to Chicago in 1871 and engaged in the meat business for several years. From there he moved to Michigan where he resided a short time and then moved to Decorah, Ia. April 30, 1882, he came to Estherville where he had since resided and was one of the oldest residents of this town. He was one of the highly respected citizens of Estherville and had lived an honorable and useful life. He was straightforward and honest in all business transactions. He was a member of the German-Lutheran church and a devout Christian. Besides a widow, three sons, J. H. Scharfenberg, of Jasper, Minn., George Scharfenberg, Jr., of Fairmont, Minn., and L. H. Scharfenberg, of this city, are left to mourn his death.Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in the Lutheran church, Rev. Berhen, preaching the sermon, and the remains interred in the Oak Hill Cemetery. The pall bearers were: John Bork, Wm. Linke, Emil Hoffman, Chas. Kohlstad, Frank Guinty and Wm. Zerke.
