Mrs. Ralph McKay Dies at Spencer

Mrs. Ralph McKay, 68, lifetime resident of Estherville, died Wednesday [June 21, 1967] at 2:30 p.m. at St. Luke’s Lutheran Home at Spencer. Mrs. McKay had been in failing health for the past year and a half. Her death was attributed to cancer. She had been at St. Luke’s since Feb. 14.

The former Edith Soper was born Aug. 26, 1898, in Estherville to Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Soper. She attended Estherville elementary schools and graduated from Estherville High School in1917. She also graduated from Rockford School of Nursing at Rockford, Ill.

She was married Aug. 24, 1921, to Ralph J. McKay at Davenport. Mr. and Mrs. McKay lived their entire married life in Estherville. For a time Mrs. McKay worked as a nurse at the former Coleman Hospital. Mr. McKay died in 1949.

Mrs. McKay was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Eastern Star, White Shrine, the Social Order of Beauccant, and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. J. B. (Ruth) Shine of Chicago, Ill., and Mrs. Max (Grace) Soeth of Estherville; one son, James S. McKay of Spencer; seven grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Homer Black of Clearwater, Fla., and one brother, Horace Soper of Clearwater, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

Funeral services are to be Friday at 3:30 p.m. in First Presbyterian Church. The church service will be preceded at 3 p.m. by a family service, Rev. H. Allen Wirtz officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Fuhrman Funeral Home from 3 p.m. today until 1 p.m. Friday when the body will be taken to the church to lie in state until time of services.

Pallbearers are to be Harry Simpson, Clyde Sanborn, Leon Pratt, N.E. Demoney, Frank Vedder, and Verlyn Vedder. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, June 22, 1967)
