Louis Mathwig Pioneer Settler Died Suddenly Sunday Night

The community was shocked on Monday morning when it was learned that Louis Mathwig, one of our pioneers of sixty-five years residence in this county had passed away very suddenly at his home on north Sixth street at eleven forty on Sunday night.

Mr. Mathwig was sixty-nine years of age at the time of his death. He was born in Germany and came to this country when four years of age with his parents. After a year spent in Wisconsin they settled in Emmet county near the state line and he resided there until about twelve years ago when he moved to this city. He was one of Emmet county’s prosperous farmers and was very thorough in his work. His neighbors always had a good word for him. He was interested in farm work and in any maters pertaining to farm work.

For the past few years he has been a resident of this city and has made many warm friends. While his health has not been the best he has recently been feeling very well. On Sunday he had a sinking spell and with each of these attacks he became much worse. In the evening he was considered in a very serious condition and he became very rapidly worse until death came.

Mr. Mathwig leaves to mourn his death his wife and three daughters, Martha, Laura and Edith, the two latter still remain at home.

The funeral services will be held from the home on Thursday afternoon at two o’clock and from the Presbyterian church at 2:30, the Rev. Lang officiating. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, April 20, 1927)

Mathwig Funeral Will Take Place Thursday P.M.
Death Claims 60 Year Old Pioneer Farmer After Heart Attacks

Funeral services for Louis Mathwig, 69 year old pioneer farmer, who died Monday morning, will be held Thursday afternoon at the Presbyterian church 2:30 o’clock. The Rev. Otis Lang of the German Lutheran church, of which Mr. Mathwig was a member, will be in charge.

Death came to Mr. Mathwig after a brief illness. Last Saturday and Sunday he suffered several heart attacks and the end came Monday morning.

The retired farmer was the son of Mr. and Mrs. August Mathwig and was born in the province of Posen, German, on June 20, 1858. Coming to America with his parents at the age of four, he homesteaded in Emmet County, after living a year in Wisconsin on a farm northeast of Estherville which he still owns.

Mr. Mathwig is survived by his widow and three daughters, Mrs. August Koenecke of Lisbon, N. Dak., and Edith and Laura, both of Estherville. As one of the early settlers of the county, his friends were legion. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, April 20, 1927)

Obituary of Mr. Lewis Mathwig
Our departed friend and brother was Lewis Mathwig, son of Mr. and Mrs. August Mathwig. Born in Czanikau, province of Posen, Germany, on the 20th of June, 1858, he came to America with his parents as a child of four years old and settled with them in the state of Wisconsin. After living there for about a year the family moved west and landed in Jackson, Minnesota. Here they remained but a few months when the father took up a homestead in Emmet Co., Iowa, seven miles northeast of Estherville. On this farm, which at the death of his father became his property, Mr. Mathwig grew up into manhood and in the year 1882 was married to Miss Mathilda nee Tobolt. This marriage was blessed with three daughters. In 1916 the family retired from the farm and removed to Estherville where they still live.

Mr. Mathwig was a successful farmer, a respected citizen and neighbor, and above all a sincere Christina, a faithful member of the Lutheran church which he loved and the welfare of which he always had at heart, serving it faithfully for a number of years as elder and trustee. During the late years of his life he became subject to heart trouble which frequently brought on fainting spells and at times became very painful and alarming. It was during one of these that he peacefully passed away on Easter Sunday, April 17, at approximately 11:45 P.M. He thus lived to the ripe age of 68 years, 9 months and 23 days.

Mr. Mathwig is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mathilda Mathwig, and his three daughters, Mrs. August Koeneke, of Lisbon, N. Dak.; Edith and Laura Mathwig of this city, besides two sisters, Mrs. Michael Gabel and Mrs. August Prust of Ceylon, Minn., and two brothers, Fred Mathwig of LeMars, Iowa, and John Mathwig of Dunnell, Minn., and a host of other relatives and friends.

May his mortal remains rest in the grave in peace until the Lord will call them forth in glory on the great resurrection day. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, April 27, 1927)
