Robt. Martin, 54, Dies at Vetsí Hospital

Robert Wayne Martin, 54, 1014 North Ninth street, died at 10:10 a.m. yesterday at the Veteranís hospital at Des Moines where he had been receiving treatment for cancer. He had been in ill health for the past five years.

Mr. Martin was born March 15, 1898, in Alba, Mo., and moved with his parents to Union, Ia., as a young boy. He attended the Union grade and high schools.

He served for a year in the armed forces during World War I before his marriage to Agnes L. Gorham on Aug. 28, 1920, in Union. Continuing to live in Union, he managed an elevator three until World War II when he moved to Des Moines to work in a defense plant. The couple has been living in Estherville for the past eight years and Mr. Martin had been employed at the Golden Sun Milling company here. He was a member of the Christian church here.

Surviving his death are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Darold (Phyllis) Griffith of Estherville; two grandchildren, Sandra Kay and Linda Lee Griffith; five brothers, Frank of Marshalltown, Charles and Clifford of Aiken, S.C., Ralph of Whitten and Lewis of Grundy Center; two sisters, Margaret of Grundy Center and Mildred of Marshalltown; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. L. Martin of Union; 24 nieces and nephews and six great nephews and nieces.

Military funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Christian church, the Rev. Clyde Leeds officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery. The body will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at which time the casket will be closed. The Sternborg funeral home is in charge of arrangements.

Veterans who can take part in the firing squad are requested to contact Eddie Burt of Ralph Boone or to meet at 1:45 p.m. at the Veteranís club. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, March 11, 1953)
