Another Early Settler Gets Final Summons
J. H. Martin Dies Wednesday at Local Hospital of Cancer

James Henry Martin, 74, an early settler in Emmet county, died at a local hospital at 3:45 Wednesday [July 26, 1933] morning of cancer of the stomach. Mr. Martin had failed rapidly in health since the death of is wife a year ago and had been taken to the hospital five weeks ago.

Mr. Martin and his family came to Emmet county 44 years ago from Illinois. He had been born in Bureau county on Sept. 9, 1858 and was married there in 1884 to Idella Lockard. The trip to Iowa was made with team and wagon and the country six miles southwest of Estherville, where Mr. Martin had purchased a farm was not far from a pioneer condition. He farmed and developed his land until 1918 when he retired from active work and moved with his wife and younger children into Estherville. Here they built an attractive residence on South Third avenue.

Mr. Martin is survived by seven children, Mrs. Richard Richardson of Glasgow, Mont., C. C. Martin of Huntington, Leonard and Glenn of Terril, and Mrs. Floyd Lytle and Mrs. R. E. Lundgren of Estherville. There are also 15 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow (Friday) at two o’clock from the M.E. church of which Mr. Martin was a member, following a short prayer service at the Mahlum and Anderson funeral chapel. Rev. W. A. WinterStein, pastor of the church will be in charge. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, July 27, 1933)
