Death Calls Miss Augusta Lippert

After an illness of only a few weeks Miss August Lippert passed away at the home of her parents, four and one-half miles southwest of Wallingford, Sunday [April 2, 1922] night.

Miss Lippert was a graduate nurse and had been called here a short time ago to nurse her brother who was ill with typhoid fever and died in February. She was a young lady a little past twenty-six years of age and of a most charming disposition and lovable character.

Funeral services were held from the German Lutheran church in this city Wednesday afternoon and interment made in Oak Hill cemetery.

There are left to mourn the untimely death of this young lady, a father and mother and three sisters, who have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community in this hour of great affliction. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, April 5, 1922)

This community was extremely shocked Monday morning to hear of the death of Miss Gusta Lippert, which occurred Sunday evening. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Lippert, are having a double share of sorrow as about five weeks ago their only son passed away. The cause of the young lady’s death was typhoid fever. Popular Young Lady Died of Typhoid Fever and Inflammatory Rheumatism

Miss Augusta Elizabeth Lippert passed away at the home of her parents after an illness of four weeks with typhoid fever, and inflammatory rheumatism which set in and caused her death. After she had been sick three weeks there was some hope for her recovery and not until the last few hours was hope entirely given up.

She was born at Graettinger on December 5, 1895, and later moved with her parents to their home farm northwest of Graettinger. In 1916 she moved to Estherville with her parents and in a few years moved back to the home farm and lived there until her death. She died April 2, 1922 at 8:40 p.m. at the age of 26 years, 8 months and 27 days.

Miss Lippert was highly educated, having attended the public school, Estherville high school, also taking a course in nursing at Des Moines and St. Louis, Missouri, at which time she came home on account of sickness and after recovery, nursed in the Coleman hospital at Estherville a while. Later she continued her nursing course at Sioux City at which time she was called home on account of her brother’s illness. She was willing to assist in taking care of her only beloved brother until the very end and contracted the disease from him.

The news of her death will be a shock to all who knew her as she, as a nurse and friend was willing to always assist and help everyone in need. A shadow of sorrow has been brought over the community by her early departure.
She was very capable of doing her work which she had chosen for herself and many were the live she nursed back to strength. She was always cheerful and bright, which, as well as many other good traits of character, made people love and highly respect her.

She leaves to mourn her loss, her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. John Lippert, and three sisters, Amelia Elaine, a nurse at Sioux City, but at present sick at home with the same epidemic; Kathryn Mathilda, a teacher in our public schools and staying at home; Pauline Kathryn, a stenographer at Gilmore City, and numerous other relatives in Europe, besides a host of friends.

She was a loving, dutiful and cheerful daughter, as well as sisters, friend, and nurse, and will be greatly missed by the ones who are asked to mourn here death in the prime of life she looked forward to the many people who would need her care, which she would always willingly and gladly give.

Following is a copy of the letter received from the doctors and nurse of Sioux City:

“Last night we received the sad news of the death of your daughter. I can assure you that all we physicians and all of the nurses who worked with your daughter are deeply grieved. We were in hopes that before very long she would be able to be with us again with her sunny disposition. Well, God’s ways are not always our ways and all we can do is to bow our heads and say: “What god does is well done”. I am sure that this is the way you feel about it too. And now we are glad to know that the little girl is Home with her Savior, far from harm. I wish to assure you that we all loved her and that she was a splendid girl, a good Christian, always kind and obliging. We shall miss her for a long time.

We hope that you have received the uniform that we sent last night, and also the flowers which were sent from the doctors and nurses. We trust that everything will reach you in proper time.

We shall appreciate a few words from you after everything is over, telling us about her last hours and whether or not there is anything she said that might concern us.

Wishing you God’s grace and blessing, I remain with kindest regards, from all the doctors and the nurses, Sincerely yours,
The Hillside Hospital
By Dr. S. W. Stoads.

The funeral was held Wednesday at 12:30 at the house and at 2:00 o’clock at the church at Estherville. The services were conducted by Rev. Andrae of Estherville and she was laid to rest beside her dear brother, who was called just a short time ago, in the family lot at Oak Hill Cemetery at Estherville.

The pall bearers were: Charles Berg, Frank Eisenbast, William Nelson, Thomas Thompson, Louis Bochmer and Lars Thompson.

A host of friends as well as parents and sisters were present to see her laid to rest in her nursing uniform.

The many floral wreaths and bouquets which they presented to show the high regard in which they held her, were left on the grave of their dear, honored and cherished daughter, sister and friend.

Two little Angels new on high,
Two links now bind us to the sky,
Two fingers beckon us to com,
Lord, give me strength our loss to bear,
And lead us in the heavenly way,
Oh! May we meet our children there,
In realms of everlasting day.
