Milo Lawrence died last Monday afternoon of scarlet fever. The sad news of his death was heard by everyone with surprise and sorrow, as Milo was at school the previous Friday and his sickness was not known till the dread disease made such sudden and rapid progress that his little life was the penalty. He was about five years old and wonderfully bright and forward for his age, one of the first in his class at school, his Sabbath-school lesion always committed and one of the brightest scholars in the Junior Endeavor. He has gone to his maker and is a bright gem in the heavenly thong. The remains were interred in the West Side cemetery Tuesday morning. The Lawrence family have the sympathy of the entire community in their great affliction. The suddenness of the bereavement making it all the more heart-rending, as they did not consider him dangerously ill till Sunday afternoon. This leaves them three remaining children. Death by Scarlet Fever
A particularly sad death occurred soon after noon Monday. That dread disease, scarlet fever, suddenly entered the community and began its ravages upon the family of N. A. Lawrence. Their little five-year-old son, Milo, was in school Friday bright and well. The next day he was taken sick and grew rapidly worse. By Sunday noon the disease was well developed and was pronounced by the physician as malignant scarlet fever. Death seemed determined to secure its victim and the struggle was short. The burial took place at the east (west) cemetery Tuesday morning. The almost heartbroken parents were denied, not only by provision of the law but by their own desire to do everything in their power to protect others, the sad privilege of attending the remains to their resting place. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to this most excellent family in their bitter misfortune and bereavement. (Northern Vindicator, Estherville, IA, March 19, 1896)
