Arnold Kernen Passes to Reward
Highly Respected Old Settler of Emmet County Died of Complications Last Wednesday

Arnold Kernen, southwest of Estherville, near Raleigh, died of kidney complications last Wednesday, April 16th. Funeral was held from the Christian church in this city Saturday afternoon, Rev. Hurd of Rock Rapids, the former pastor of deceased, officiating. Interment was made in Oak Hill cemetery.

Mr. Kernen was born in Berne, Switzerland, forty-six years ago and came to the United States when he was twelve years of age. In 1895 he came to Emmet County with his brothers, J. H., settling on a farm about six miles southwest of Estherville. With the exception of a few years spent in Alabama he has resided here continuously since that time.

On February 24, 1901 he was united in marriage to Miss Ethel Johnson, in Alabama. To this union two sons, Walter and Arnold, were born, aged respectively 12 and 15 years.

He was a splendid Christian gentleman, and one of Emmet county’s very best citizens. He was the kindest of neighbors, a devoted husband and indulgent father. The community was the better for his living. His loss will be sorely felt among his associates and deeply mourned at home.

His wife and two sons, and his brothers, J.H., of Raleight, and Jake of Sheboyegan, Wisconsin, survives him. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, April 23, 1919)
