Died – Jacob Kernen died at his home in Center township, Friday, Apr. 16. The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church in this city Sunday at 2 o’clock. Mr. Kernen was born in Switzerland in 1840. He came to this country with his family about twenty years ago and settled in Blackhawk county, Iowa. The family moved to Emmet county in 1892 and settled in Center township where they have since resided. A wife and six children, three sons and three daughters, mourn the loss of the deceased. One daughter still lives in the native country Switzerland; one son lives in Wisconsin; the others are residents of this county. Mr. Kernen has been suffering for some time with la grippe which developed into pneumonia a few days before his death. (Weekly Northern Vindicator, Estherville, IA, April 22, 1897)
