Dr. M. E. Wilson
A Pioneer and Well Known Physician DiesA pioneer doctor, M. E. Wilson passed away at his home at the corner of Ninth and Howard Street on last Saturday [May 16, 1931] morning at six o’clock.
He had been afflicted for several years with heart trouble, and with other complications. He has not been in active practice for three years but has always had his old patients who counciled with him to the very last.
His offices over the K & K hardware store was given up sometime ago and he kept an open office at his home and occasionally he made calls to those who had been patients for years.
Dr. Wilson was not only an excellent physician but was a wonderful man. His council along all lines was full of thought and while not much of a talker, when he spoke he said a great deal in the fewest of words.
While he was in college in the medical department at Iowa City, the junior editor was in the law department. For a year we had the pleasure of rooming with Dr. Wilson and to say the least it was a pleasure. We found him to be a gentleman and one who could be counciled and his advice was sound.
Dr. Wilson was born February 5, 1871, in Warwick, Ontario [Quebec], Canada, the youngest of a family of twelve children. He came to Estherville in 1893. Later he went to the university and graduated from the medical department in 1897. He returned to Estherville and opened an office for the practice of his profession. He was united in marriage to Margaret Jones of Sparta, Wis., in 1899 and to this union there was one daughter, Dorothy, born. Mr. and Mrs. Wilson adopted a daughter, Maybelle.
He was a member of the Masonic order and of the Cedar Rapids Consistory and the Elks order of this city. He was affiliated with the Presbyterian Church.
Dr. Wilson is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. A. J. Rogers, of Milwaukee, and Mrs. LaMonte Harris, of Sarasota, Florida. He has a brother, J. H. Wilson, residing in this city.
The funeral services were held at 2:30 today from the home, the Rev. Arthur G. Bailey officiating, and the remains were laid to rest in Oak Hill cemetery.
The Masons will be in charge of the services at the cemetery. Five local doctors, C. E. Birney, R. C. Coleman, W. E. Bradley, M. T. Morton, L. W. Loving and Judge N. J. Lee will serve as pallbearers.
Those from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. John Bradley, of Sparta, Wis.; Mrs. A. C. Wilson, of Oelwein, Mrs. John Lavis of Kempster, Wis., and Mrs. LaMonte Harris of Sarasota, Florida. (Estherville, Enterprise, Estherville, IA, May 20, 1931)
