Mel Jarvis Found Dead
At the Home of F.M. Brown on North Seventh Street Early Tuesday Morning
Mel Jarvis was found dead in bed at the F.M. Brown home on north Seventh street about 7:30 Tuesday morning. He had complained to Dr. Bradley several times of late that he was subject to pains around his heart and felt weak. He also asked the doctor if a little brandy would be the proper thing to take when he felt one of those spells coming on and when informed by the doctor that it would, he told of carrying a small flask of brandy in his grip. From all appearances when found Tuesday morning he had gotten up, opened his grip, taken the bottle out and pulled the cork, but whether he had taken any of the brandy is not known as the bottle was on the floor half empty and he had fallen back on the bed. The light in the room was still burning and the occupants of the house thought they heard him up and go to the bath room at four o’clock. It is presumed that when he felt this pain around his heart he got up and went to his grip to take some of it and fell back and died.Mel Jarvis was one of the pioneer residents of Emmet county. He was a bachelor and of late had been spending his summers here and winters in other parts of the country. He had spent several winters in California and Honolulu, but last winter he was in Florida and the coming winter was arranging to go to Texas. He intended to go yesterday morning with A. Barber up to Minnesota to remain some time before starting for Texas.
His brother, C. W. Jarvis, who resides at Davenport, Wash., was at once notified of his death by wire and no arrangements have yet been made for the funeral. Deceased is a distant relative of Dr. W. E. Bradley who has taken charge of all arrangements and is awaiting word from C. W. Jarvis as to where burial shall be. A niece at St. Paul has also been notified and will probably arrive in Estherville today. C. W. Jarvis has wired that he will arrive here Friday morning.
