Longtime City Resident Dies at 94
Charles Gustafson, who was born in Sweden nearly a century ago, died yesterday afternoon at the Good Samaritan Home here. He was 94.Gustafson came to the United States in 1857 at the age of 18, residing first in Varna, Ill., where he was married to Anna Rose, Jan. 27, 1862. The couple lived near Wenona, Ill., for 12 years, then moved to Canada for two years and from there to Carthage, S.D., where they remained for about three years.
In 1912 the Gustafson’s arrived in Emmet County to farm until his retirement in 1925, when they moved to Estherville. Mrs. Gustafson died here in 1927. Six children were born to the couple.
In 1932 Mr. Gustafson was remarried to Mrs. Carrie Buck, who died in 1942.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, a son who was killed in service, four sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include a son and two daughters, Clark Gustafson, Mrs. John (Everene) Amundson and Mrs. Kenneth (Ethel) Meadows, all of Estherville, and one son, Roy Gustafson of Fairmont. Mrs. Archie Ball of Bingham Lake, Minn., who is a stepdaughter, 10 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren also survive.
Mr. Gustafson had been a resident at the Good Samaritan Home since January, 1959. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church here.
The Rev. James K. Lyon and the Rev. Ronald Gustafson, Mitchell, S.D., a grandson, will conduct a funeral service at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Sandin-Furhman Funeral Home. There will be a family service at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, June 22, 1962)
