Funeral Rites for P. Gipson Are Held Here
Peter Gipson, 83, residing south west of Terril, died at 1:30 a.m. Friday after having suffered from neuritis and brights disease. Funeral services were to have been held Tuesday, but the body, which was shipped here on the M. & St. L. railway did not arrive here until Wednesday afternoon as the train was several hours late.The funeral was held at the Estherville Lutheran church, the Rev. L. A. Mathre in charge. Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery.
Peter Gipson was born in Sweden Dec. 9, 1845. He emigrated to America in 1890 [1880], coming first to Omaha, Neb. In 1882 he came to Estherville. Here he was married a year later to Mathilda Johnson, also of Estherville. They continued to make their residence in Estherville until Mrs. Gipson’s death in 1926. Four children were born to them, three sons and one daughter. Two of the sons died in early childhood.
During the past two years Mr. Gipson has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Eugene Patterson, near Terril. Besides his daughter, he leaves a son, Albert Gipson, five grandchildren and a brother in Sweden. (Estherville News, Estherville, IA, February 28, 1929)
Obituary of Peter Gipson
Peter Gipson was born in Tour Skane, Sweden, Dec. 9, 1845 and died Feb. 22, 1929 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. S. Patterson, after an illness of 8 weeks. He came to America in 1880 and located at Omaha, Neb., and later coming to Estherville, where he worked on the old B.C.R. &N. railroad.Mr. Gipson was the oldest of 7 children and a son of Jens and Carolina Gipson. In the year 1885 he was united in marriage to Miss Matilda Johnson. To this happy union four children were born, three sons and one daughter, Otto, Carl Axel, Albert and Anna. Two sons preceded Mr. and Mrs. Gipson in death. Otto died in infancy and Carl Axel passed away at the age of 8 years.
Those left to mourn his death are one son Albert of Primghar, one daughter, Mrs. E. S. Patterson of near Terril, and one brother, Mons [?] Gipson of Tomohilla, Sweden, who was unable to attend the funeral. Also five grandchildren, Clara, Dorothy, Harold, Calvin and Patty Lou Gipson and a host of friends.
Mrs. Peter Gipson passed away September 24, 1926.
Funeral services were held at the Lutheran church at Estherville Tuesday afternoon. The remains will be laid to rest beside those of his wife at Oakdale [Oak Hill] cemetery at Estherville. (Terril Record, Terril, IA, February 28, 1929)
