Miles Edwards Fatally Hurt Sunday
Thrown From Cycle
Bother, Maurice, Driver of Vehicle, Critically Hurt But Recovery is Expected
Funeral Thursday

Miles Edwards, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Edwards, was killed and his brother, Maurice, was seriously injured Sunday afternoon when the motorcycle on which they were riding struck a car driven by James Kirk of Estherville and glanced off into a light post.

The accident occurred about 2 p.m. on South Sixth street, near the Northern Lumber Co. Maurice was travelling north on his motorcycle with Miles on the seat behind him. The Kirk car, which was just ahead of them, suddenly turned into the lumber company alley on the left.

Maurice was unable to stop the motorcycle and swung out attempting to miss the automobile, but struck it on the left side and skidded on into a light post. Miles was thrown over the back of his brother and against the pole. One leg and his skull were fractured.

The older boy was somewhat protected by the handlebars. His injuries were determined as a broken hip and internal injuries.

Miles was taken to the hospital by Mrs. Ivar Brandt. He died at 4:50 p.m. Maurice’s injuries are critical but somewhat improved, according to the physician today.

The boy is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Edwards, four sisters, Mrs. Jack Howard, Salmon City, Idaho; Mrs. Marian Wrotten, Jordan Valley, Ore.; Mrs. Earl Reed, Arnolds Park; Alice and Doris at home; and five brothers, Hamilton, Philadelphia, Douglas, Marvin, Maurice and Gene, Estherville.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at the Mahlum and Anderson funeral chapel and at 3 o’clock at the M.E. Church in charge of Rev. Ortmeyer. Mrs. Howard is on her way here for the services but Mrs. Wrotten and Hamilton were here a short time ago and cannot return for the funeral. Miles Edwards Dies From Injuries Sunday
Another death was added to the auto accidents when Miles Edwards was killed when a motor cycle collided with an automobile driven by James Kirk, throwing him against an electroler. The accident occurred about 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon.

Maurice Edwards, who was driving the motor cycle is in the Coleman hospital with a fractured right pelvis and injuries to his kidneys.

The accident happened on South Sixth street. James Kirk with his wife and son were driving north from the Edwards Truck and Transfer company. Maurice Edwards also left the truck offices driving the motor cycle on which his brother was riding on the rear.

They had gone north to a blind street north of the Northern Lumber company. Kirk made the turn to go west on the blind street just as the Edwards boys caught up with him. They did not think he would make the turn and as he did their cycle crashed into the side of the car.

It was a glancing blow and the cycle was forced to the curb on the west side of the street. It hit the curb with force. Miles was thrown off hitting his head on the electroler. Maurice also crashed into the post.

Both boys were rushed to the Coleman hospital where Miles died an hour later. His skull was fractured. Two pieces were taken out of his leg and the hip was broken. Ed Case gave the boy quart of blood but he was too severely injured.

Funeral services for Miles Edwards were held this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock from the Mahlum and Anderson chapel, and at 3:00 o’clock at the Christina church. The Rev. Sawyer officiated. Interment will be in the Oak Hill cemetery. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, August 25, 1938)
