Mrs. Birney Called in Death
Prominent Estherville Woman, Wife of Local Surgeon, is Laid to Rest Monday

Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon for Mrs. C. E. Birney who passed away Thursday [April 6, 1944] evening last at approximately 9 p.m. Mrs. Birney died following a long illness during which time she was confined to her home.

Elizabeth Smith Birney was born in Burlington, the daughter of William F. Smith and Illinois Hunt Smith. She was married to Dr. C. E. Birney at Richland, Iowa and came to Estherville where she has since resided.

Mrs. Birney has been a member of the library board for a number of years, a member of the D.A.R. and the Eastern Star, and a member of the First Presbyterian church since 1900.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. C. E. Birney, one son, John, one brother, Fred W. Smith of Richland and two sisters, Mrs. C. E. Todd of Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Samuel Reaney of Devils Lake, N.Dak.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 from the home Sunday afternoon and at 2:30 from the First Presbyterian church with the Rev. Joseph E. Kennedy in charge. Pallbearers were Francis Shadle, Roy Burt, Ed Maniece, Carl Anderson, Ben Roach and Paul Gray, Jr. Interment was made in Oakhill cemetery.
