John Bixby, 60 Dies after Long Illness
John Bixby, 59, lifelong Estherville resident, died t 4:15 this morning in Holy Family hospital after a long illness resulting from a heart ailment.
For 39 years he was an employee of the Rock Island railroad until ill health forced him to retire from his position as conductor in October, 1945. He had entered the hospital three days ago.
Mr. Bixby was born Sept. 7, 1887, in Estherville, the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Bixby. He received his education in the Estherville schools and on Jan. 20, 1909, was married to Miss Etta Johnson of Estherville in a ceremony which took place here. He was a member of the Order of Railway Conductors.
Surviving are his wife, three daughters, Marian Bixby who is a nurse at Glen Lake Sanitarium near Minneapolis, Betty and Barbara of Estherville, a son, Kenneth, of Estherville; two grandchildren, Jack and Beth Ann Bixby; two sisters, Mrs. Florence Pepin of Minneapolis and Mrs. Sybil Hansen of Pittsburgh, Kans., and a brother, William Bixby of Cazenovia, Wis. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol [Caryl] Lee, who died in infancy.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Estherville Lutheran church. A private service for the family will be held at 1:30 in the Mahlum and Sandin chapel.
Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
Friends may call at the Mahlum and Sandin chapel from tomorrow afternoon until Thursday morning at 10 a.m. when the body will be taken to the Estherville Lutheran church to lie in state there until time of service. Friends wishing to view the body should do so before the funeral because the casket will be closed during the funeral and will not be opened afterwards.
