Obituary George W. Hawk
George W. Hawk was born in Jackson County, Ohio, April 12, 1836. He died May 18, 1917, at the age of 81 years, 1 month and 6 days. When a small boy he moved with his parents to Greene County, Iowa. He was married to Louisa Scott at Rockford, Iowa, July 25, 1857. They moved to Estherville, Iowa in 1882, where he lived until five years ago when he moved to Boise, Idaho, and last fall to Spokane, Washington.
He was the father of eight children, six of whom are living. Two children and his wife preceded him to the better land. The children left to mourn his death are Mrs. Lizzie Rhodes, Chas. E. Hawk, and Mrs. Ike Rogers of this city, Ike Hawk of Boise, Idaho; and Mrs. Joe Pullen of Walla Walla, Washington, at whose home he passed away.
When a young man he united with the Christian church and was one of the charter members of the church of this city. He was a man greatly loved by little children. He was a friend of all, and while he left no material wealth he left the wealth of an honest name and a pure character.
The funeral services were conducted at the residence of his son, Chas. E. Hawk, on South Eighth street on Thursday morning by Rev. J. S. Coffin, minister of the Christian church of this city. The remains were laid to rest in the Oak Hill cemetery. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, May 30, 1917)
Note: there seems to be a difference of opinion as to where and the exact date George died. The obituary is probably the most accurate.
