Old Settler Dead
Mrs. Geo. W. Hawk Passed Away Last Week
Came to Emmet County in 1882
Mother of Mrs. Lizzie Rhodes, Mrs. Louise Rogers and Chas. Hawk of this City

Mrs. Geo. W. Hawk died at Missouri Valley last week. The remains were brought here for burial. Funeral services were held at the Chas. Hawk home Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock and burial made in Oak Hill cemetery. A friend contributed the following write-up of her life:

Louise Scott was born in Jackson county, Ohio, November 2, 1836, departed this life at Missouri Valley, Iowa, November 24, 1911. When a small child she came with her parents to Fort Wayne, Indiana, and when eighteen years of age they moved to Green county, Wisconsin, later moving to Floyd county, Iowa, where she was united in marriage to George W. Hawk at Rockford, Iowa, July 25, 1857. She was the mother of eight children, two of whom, an infant daughter and a sixteen-year-old son, was awaiting her on the other side. Besides her husband six children, two brothers and four sisters are left to join her. One sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Harmon preceded her just one month and twenty-two days. The children living are: Mrs. Lizzie Rhodes, Mrs. Louise Rogers and Chas. Hawk, of this city; Mrs. Sarah Mattson, of Spokane, Washington; Mrs. Jane Pullen of Springston, Idaho; I. K. Hawk of Boise, Idaho. When sixteen years of age she united with the Church of Christ near Fort Wayne, Indiana, and has been a charter member of three congregations and her consistent Christian living has been an inspiration to her family and all who knew her. She has resided here in Estherville almost continually since 1882 and her friends are numbered by her acquaintances. Grandma Hawk will long be remembered by the neighbors and their children, for it was one of her greatest joys to fill the wants of the children who call her grandma. I believe the greatest impression that is left with her children was the absolute purity of her daily life and conversation. Her place in the house and neighborhood can never be filled. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, February 22, 1911)
