Mrs. John Johnson [Mary] died at her home west of the river Friday [October 27, 1899] afternoon, aged 57 years. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon. Deceased was one of the oldest settlers in the county and had many warm friends who extend sympathy to the bereaved family. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, November 1, 1899)

The beloved wife of John Johnson on the west side of the river, died of consumption last Friday, age 54. Funeral services were held from the residence Sunday afternoon, Rev. Wilcox, Chaplain of the Vandenburg Post G.A.R. assisted by the W.R.C. of which organization deceased was an active and greatly esteemed member. A husband, four daughters and two sons are left to mourn the death of a devoted wife and loving mother. (Emmet County Republican, Estherville, IA, November 2, 1899)
