John Johnson Succumbs to Long Illness
Civil War Veteran Dies at 86

John Johnson, 86, Civil war veteran, died Tuesday, December 17, [1929] at the Old Soldiers’ hospital at Minneapolis. Mr. Johnson had been failing in health for the last two years. For the past three months he has been at the hospital in Minneapolis.

John Johnson was born in Norway Sept. 24, 1843. When two years old he came to America with his parents, who settled in Wisconsin. Mr. Johnson served for three years in the Civil war as a member of the 31st Wisconsin regiment.

In 1867 he was married to Mary Clarquist. Six children were born to them. In 1872 they came to Palo Alto county and took a homestead. Later they moved to Emmet county. They lived for a time at Ruthven and in 1893 they came to Estherville.

In 1900 Mrs. Johnson died. Mr. Johnson lived here until 1915. He then moved to Pequot, Minn.

Mr. Johnson is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Anna Gipsen, Mrs. B. F. Witte, and Mrs. John Hanson of Newman Grove, [?], and Mrs. Pete Larson of Superior, Wis., and two sons, E. W. Johnson and Lewis Johnson of Pequot, Minn.

The funeral took place Friday at the Mahlum and Anderson chapel. The Rev. D. A. [?} officiated. Burial was made in the Old Soldiers’ plot at Oak Hill cemetery. (Estherville News, Estherville, IA, December 26, 1929)
