Old Resident Dead
Mrs. Harriet E. Westcott Passes Away at the Home of Her Grand-daughterMrs. Harriet E. Westcott, one of the pioneer residents of Estherville, and who is remembered most kindly by many of the older residents of the city, passed away early last week, while visiting her grand-daughter, Mrs. Frank Ives at Red Oak, Iowa. The remains were brought to the city and laid to rest in Oak Hill cemetery Thursday afternoon. The funeral was held from the Free Baptist church, Rev. A. C. Church, officiating.
Harriet Smith was born in Fulton, N.Y., Aug. 19, 1828. She was married to George Westcott in New York City in 1850. They moved to Wisconsin in 1859 and in 1863 they moved to this city. For some time after their arrival here, they being among the earliest residents, they lived in the barracks, which had been constructed to give protection to the people against the Indians.
In 1901 Mrs. Westcott went to Crookston, Minn., to make her home with her son, Lew Westcott, where she lived except when visiting with other relatives.
She is survived by her two sons, Fred and Lew Westcott, who live at Northcote, Minn. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, November 4, 1903)
