Died – At his home south of Estherville on Saturday, June 14, Mr. Joseph Pullen of hemorrhage of the lungs. Aged 85 years.
The deceased has been a resident of Estherville for the last 30 years and has always proven himself an honest and upright man and true citizen. Ever since his sickness last spring he has not been well and the crisis came Saturday and he died in a few minutes after the hemorrhage. The funeral services were held in the Baptist church on Sunday Rev. R. A. Thompson, the Christian minister, preaching the sermon. The church was crowded to the utmost by those who had gathered to pay their last respects to the dead and many were obliged to go away which showed how universally he was respected. He leaves a wife and three little children to mourn his loss. The family have the sympathy of the entire community. (Northern Vindicator, Estherville, IA, June 20, 1890)
Joe Pullen Dead
Joe Pullen, who has lived here since boyhood, and who was known to nearly everyone hereabouts, passed away Saturday morning after an illness of about ten weeks. The sickness which brought on his death was contracted while working with the ice gang at Spirit Lake in March. Lung fever set in, and finally quick consumption which soon hastened him to an untimely grave. Joe was about 35 years of age and leaves a wife and three little children besides numerous friends and relatives to mourn him. The funeral was held at the Baptist church and was largely attended. Rev. Thompson of the Christian church preached the sermon. The remains were placed in East Hill [East Side] cemetery. The grieved ones have the fullest sympathy of the community in their sad affliction.
