Death of George Schaad Sr.
Pioneer of Emmet County Dies at Home of His Daughter-in-law Saturday Morning
Eighty-Six Years Old
Came to Emmet County Over Forty-Five Years Ago
Geo. F. Schaad Sr. died at the home of his daughter-in-law, Mrs. George Schaad Jr., Saturday morning October 8th, aged 86 years and 4 months. Funeral services were held from the Baptist church Monday afternoon and the body laid to rest in the Oak Hill cemetery beside that of his wife who had gone to her reward six years ago.

Grandpa Schaad was a conspicuous figure in Emmet county. He came here forty-five years ago and settled on a homestead in Ellsworth township near where the town of Huntington is now situated. He lived on this farm until about eighteen years ago when he moved to Estherville and has resided here since. He was of German descent and a man of strong individuality. While in Ellsworth he held various minor offices and always filled them with credit to himself. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Fancher, of Lincoln, Nebraska, who was with him when he died and a son, George, whose whereabouts are not known. Another daughter, Mrs. Wm. Weir, died about fifteen years ago and a son, Charles, died very suddenly somewhere in the west about eight years ago.

He was born in Lanbach, Germany, January 29 1824. He was educated in the university of that country in German, French and Greek. He came to New York in 1847 and in 1849 was married to Miss Libbie B. Hoy. To this union four children were born: Chas. H., Mrs. E. B. Fancher, Eliza H. and Geo. F.

In 1856 he moved to Iowa and located in Waterloo and three years later moved to Algona, where he joined the Northern Brigade, during the Indian outbreak in 1862. He then joined the state militia in 1864 and served with it until the close of the civil war. In 1865 he came to Emmet county and settled on a homestead near Eagle Lake. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, October 12, 1910)
