Retired Engineer for County Dies at 84

L. L. (Les) Boggess, who served as Emmet county engineer for 31 years, died at 10 o'clock last nigh at Holy Family Hospital. He was 84.

Mr. Boggess had been ill for about two years and had spent the past two weeks in the hospital.

He came to Estherville in 1909 and two years later, on October 10, 1911, he was united in marriage to Mary Nolan here.

Mr. Boggess received his Iowa Professional Engineer and Land Surveyor license in 1920 and was instrument man and assistant to engineer Fred A. McDonnell until his death in 1932.

The board of supervisors appointed him engineer at that time and he served in that capacity, except for three years (1942-45) as Clarke County engineer at Osceola, until his retirement on April 1, 1956.

He was born at Bassett, April 30, 1878, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Boggess. His parents, five brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.

Surviving are his widow, two brothers, Cal, of Bassett and John of Estherville, and one sister, Mrs. Laura Hanson of Estherville.

Children surviving are two sons, Nolan r. and Maurice, and a daughter, Mrs. Bernard Johnson, all of Estherville; and another son, Francis of Kensett. There are 21 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services are set for 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Church here, the Rev. James H. Duhigg officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's cemetery.

Rosary will be recited tonight and tomorrow night at 8 p.m. at the Sandin-Fuhrman funeral home. Friends may call at the home after 7 o'clock this evening.
