Henry Eglin Dead
His Sudden Death Occurred Friday Morning
This community was shocked Friday morning by the announcement that Henry Eglin, the well known blacksmith and wagonmaker in this city was dead. He had been at work in his place of business on Wednesday and the fact that he was dead could hardly be realized. It was learned afterwards that he was taken sick in his shop Wednesday afternoon and a doctor was summoned. He was taken to his home in the north part of town and after a careful examination it was found he had an abscess on his brain. He continued to grow worse and the following day, the abscess bursted rendering him unconscious and from which he never recovered and died at 4:30 Friday morning.

Henry Eglin was a man in every sense of the word. It was the writer’s good fortune to have known him long and well and we only knew him to esteem him more highly as the years passed by. Today we miss his friendly greeting and kindly smile. Though he has gone his record has been made and will remain as a lasting treasure. In his heart of hearts he carried those he loved and his hand never weary, his step never failed in caring for and ministering to those who were in any way dependent upon him.

He was forty-seven years of age at the time of his death and had resided in Estherville since 1882, coming here from Lawler, Iowa. He was born at Leeds, England, May 4, 1860, and was 16 years old when he came to this country. After coming to Estherville he secured a position as brakeman on the B.C.R.&N., and was employed by the company for several years. In 1885 he was married to Miss Rose Sizer at Spirit Lake, and to this union four children were born, all of whom are living, Marlin W., Carl F., Gladys and Anna. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias lodge and Modern Woodman, carrying $2,000 insurance in the latter. He was also a member of the Estherville Fire Company.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at two o’clock in the Presbyterian church and his remains carried to their last resting place in the Oak Hill Cemetery. The sympathy of the entire community is extended the bereaved and fatherless children in their hours of great sorrow. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, June 12, 1907)
