Mrs. Sam Collins Pioneer Resident Dies Wednesday
Mrs. Sam Collins, 87, passed away Wednesday morning at 7:45 at her home on North 7th street after an extended illness. She had been bedfast for the past two and one-half months.
Mrs. Collins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Ames, came to Estherville in 1868 from Wisconsin. She came here with her mother and, as many other pioneer residents, resided in old Fort Defiance. Martha Ames was united in marriage to Sam Collins on February 14, sixty years ago. To this union there were four children born, all of whom are deceased except Jay Collins of Milwaukee, Wis., who arrived here Wednesday evening to make arrangements for the funeral services of his mother.
Church Affiliations
The deceased has always been a very active member of the Baptist church and was a quiet, unassuming woman who loved her duties at home and spent much time in the rearing of her family. In the pioneer days there was but little activity in a social way, but Mrs. Collins always took part in all the activities in the little village of Estherville.
As we go to press, funeral arrangements have not been completed. Services will be held in the Baptist church, probably on Friday afternoon.
She is survived by one son, Jay, of Milwaukee; a sister, Mrs. A. Barker and two grandchildren, Romaine and Gail Collins of Estherville.
