Mrs. Chas. Barber Dead.
After a prolonged illness Mrs. Charles Barber died at her home in this city last Saturday evening about ten o'clock. Hers was a very sad death in many ways, but being a devout christian she entertained no fears for the future but was resigned to the will of a higher power up to the moment when she was deprived of consciousness.
Her maiden name was Lida M. Patten. She was born at Waddington, New York, and came to Iowa in 1881. She was married to Charles Barber March 28, 1883, and they have lived in this vicinity ever since. Since she was old enough she has been connected with the church, and joined the Presbyterian church in this city nine years ago. She was broad in her religious views. She has not been well for ten years, but has not been seriously ill until about nine months ago.
The funeral was held at the Presbyterian church yesterday where a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends gathered to pay their last homage to this splendid christian lady who has lived here so long and has done what she could to help all worthy causes and enterprises.
Rev. McLeod delivered an excellent sermon, taking for his subject, the home beyond the grave, not made by hands, eternal in the heavens.
The Ladies Civic Society, of which Mrs. Barber was a member, attended the funeral in a body, as did members of the Knight of Pythias lodge of which Mr. Barber is a member.
The pall bearers were M.L. Archer, Prof. Edwin Dukes, L. Barnes, J.A. Cain, E.I. Sondrol and N.A. Lawrence.
The choir was composed of Miss Etta Graaf, Mrs. Herman Graaf, F.P. Woods and G.E. Delavan, with Mrs. Grace Cain as organist.
The floral display was fine, and the deceased arrayed in a beautiful white dress, looked as though she was sleeping peacefully instead of being wrapped in death's cold embrace.
To the sorrowing husband goes out the sympathy of this entire community at this time.
