CHAS. BARBER A PIONEER OF THIS COUNTY PASSED AWAY
Charles S. Barber, 79, one of the real old pioneers of Emmet county, passed away at the Birney hospital last Saturday morning. Mr. Barber has never been ill to any great extent but complained sometime ago of not feeling as usual. He was only ill for a short time when taken to the hospital for treatment and his death was caused from heart trouble.
Mr. Barber came here with his parents in 1862 and for years they resided in a log cabin in Emmet township. In the early day, Mr. Barber, like many other pioneers contracted the habit of hunting and fishing and the fishing habit clung to him to the last. Many of the anglers will miss his most pleasant company.
Mr. Barber was a great lover of children and was always in the past doing something for the boy scouts organization. When they were in camp some years ago, he with some detachment of boys, caught all the fish for the camp and the boys loved their Uncle Charlie, as he was termed.
Mr. Barber farmed in the early day and later was a land and insurance man of this city. He acquired property when the country was new and kept it until it became valuable. He acquired an income that allowed him to spend his winters in a warmer climate.
He was a member of the Board of Elders of the Presbyterian church since 1899 and was a heavy contributor to the church and more, a very regular attendant.
He is survived by his wife and one brother, Albert Barber, of this city.
The funeral services were held on Monday at the home at two o'clock and in the Presbyterian church at two thirty. The services were conducted by the former pastor of Mr. Barber, the Rev. Mitchell, of Cherokee, who was also a great and lasting friend and a companion of Mr. Barber on fishing trips. The Rev. Arthur Bailey assisted at the services. Interment was made in Oak Hill cemetery.
The pallbearers were Frank Hutchinson, Robert Knight, J.H. Orvis, R.O. Clark, John Darling, Charles Jackson and Dr. W.E. Bradley. The honorary pall bearers were L.L. Bingham, Wm. Harvey, Walter Wilson and Stewart Harvey.
