Lucy A. Clark Phillips was born in New York State November 19, 1841. Soon after her birth her parents moved to Pennsylvania where she was reared to womanhood. In 1860 the family moved west stopping for a few months in Wisconsin, then coming to Estherville in the spring of 1861. Her family was one of the very first to settle here and her father helped to build Fort Defiance which became the starting of the building of Estherville. On July 5, 1862, she was married to Judah Phillips. They settled on a piece of land near Estherville and continued to farm during the active years of their lives. Their family consisted of five children, one of which, Clarence, died in infancy. The others are Willis L. Phillips of Morristown, Pa., and Mrs. O. D. Barrett of Estherville, both living. Also Jacob W. and Dan C., both deceased. There are also 11 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Mr. Phillips died 20 years ago.

Mrs. Phillips joined the Methodist church in girlhood and continued a faithful member until death. She was interested in matters of the religious life and devoted her time and influence and means to the advancement of the Redeemers Kingdom. She was also a member of the Women's Relief Corps and active as long as there was an organization at work in this community. Her long acquaintance in this community made her many friends who today feel their loss.

Mrs. Phillips continued her activity well unto the close of life. Until a year ago she was customarily present at the various gatherings of the church and corps. Since that time she has been able to be around the house of the home of her daughter, Mrs. Barrett, till the day before she died. Her going was due to her weight of years which numbered 87. The funeral services were held in the Methodist church on Tuesday afternoon.
