Mrs. S. A. Mattson was born in Chautauqua County, New York in 1832. She was married in 1848 near Belvidere, Illinois. To this union eight children were born, six of whom are living; M. J. Mattson, Spokane, Washington; C. B. Mattson, North Yakima, Washington; S. H. Mattson, Sioux City, Iowa; G. W. Mattson, Watrous, Canada; Mrs. C. W. Dillman, Blue Earth, Minnesota and Mrs. J. M. Denning, Cedar Rapids. Two baby children and her husband are buried in the East Side cemetery, in Estherville.

On August 7, 1869, she moved with her husband to Emmet County, settling on a homestead which is now the V. Schmidt farm in Ellsworth township. On this farm and in Estherville, deceased lived almost continuously until about three years ago, since which time she has lived with her children. She died August 9th 1910 at the home of her son S. H. Mattson in Sioux City, aged 79 years, 2 months and 13 days. The remains were brought to Estherville for burial by the side of her husband and two children in the East Side cemetery, the 11th. Funeral services were held from the residence of R. E. Ridley, conducted by Rev. Benjamin Franklin of the Federated Baptist church.

Mrs. Mattson was a dear old christian lady. Her life was devoted to her home, her children, and neighbors. Having come here as one of the early pioneers she experienced many of the trials and hardships incident to the settlement of a new country all of which she endured with patience and fortitude. Her friends were all who knew her and the sorrow at the grave was a humble manifestation of the affection entertained for her by those of her acquaintance.
