Mathias Mathison, 1859-1915

Born in Holyldall [Halingdal], Norway, April 1859, died at his home in Estherville Friday, August 20, 1915. He remained at home with his parents until he was fifteen years of age, after which he attended Trenthen Seminary in Norway four years. He then taught school in that country ten years and soon after immigrated to America settling in Estherville in 1889, when he was thirty years of age. Most of the time since he has taught school and worked at the carpenter trade. He was united in marriage to Anna Henningson in 1883. To this union were born four children, Mathias, Mildred, Ella and Gerda. Mrs. Mathison passed away in 1892. About three years later he was united in marriage to Anna Sabo of this city, and to this union there was born three children, Anna, Sarah and Theodore.

Mr. Mathison was taken sick very suddenly while on his [way] home from work, and lingered at the point of death for several days.

While in life he was a most active worker in the Norwegian Lutheran church, being superintendent of their Sunday school, president of the Men's Society and a deacon in the church. He was considered by all one of the most earnest workers in their congregation.

The funeral services were held from the Norwegian Lutheran church on Tuesday last, Rev. J. J. Akre officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the East Side cemetery. The deceased leaves a wife and seven children to mourn his death, all being present at the funeral.
